If next years’ trends are symbols of what is happening today, is it any wonder what is Falls’ style outlook predicts as themes for what we will see in 2021?

It is probably no surprise that home decor and interior design themes for 2021 are centered around our need for stability, comfort, and warmth in these questionable and unsettling times.

If you are a homebody like myself, you tend to love Fall, partly because it marks the beginning of a new season that draws on us to nestle into our homes. For designers and style seekers, Fall is also significant because it is the time of year we learn of new trend insights from the innovators and finally see for ourselves the new product lines revealed by our favorite vendors and designers.

TREND #1: FRINGE

Love it or hate it, you should probably get used to it! Based on the first Trend Watch reports from the review of this Fall’s High High Point Market, fringe and tassels will be around for a while longer. We’ve seen quite a bit of it over the past 3 years, but given our ongoing dependence on finding comforts at home, we will continue to see more fringe and other cozy things. Tassels feel a little bit “boho”, and can elicit feelings of nostalgia, travel, and relaxation. So it is no surprise that we will be holding onto this trend for a little bit longer. You can expect to see more fringe in rugs, lighting, furniture, pillows, and probably fashion, too.

TREND #2: WARM EARTHEN TONES

Fall is also the time of year when color experts announce their color forecasts and pick a star hue, naming it “ The Color of the Year”. Sherwin Williams has already crowned the elegant, earthy, and illustrious, Urbane Bronze color of the year for 2021, and I am loving it! Although a simple white wall can be a beautiful thing, warm rich color fills our souls in times of need, like right now.

There is a real science behind colors and how they make us feel.  The old adage, “Feeling Blue”, as actually comes from studies that show the color blue is calmin, but it feeling but also can affect our moods negatively if we are surrounded by too much of it. So for now, because so many of us are seeking refuge and nurturing ourselves in more basic ways at home- the color trend forecasts we have seen so far point towards rich and earthy tones, sprinkled with our favorite rich blue hues, rusty reds, and warm orange colors.

TREND #3: AN EMPHASIS ON TEXTURE AND WOVEN ELEMENTS

We are already seeing textured materials that add dimension and an organic feel to objects, materials, and furniture. Watch for it l see it in furniture details, as well as hardware, lighting fixtures, and wallpapers. This past year we saw a lot of wicker and rattan, which remain very popular. In addition, we will see more mixed materials used in various and unique ways, as we see in the pendants shown below. The darker woven wire pendants are illuminated by the warm glow of the bulbs within and create a perfectly warm and welcoming feeling by balancing many of the earthen elements that surround us.

TREND #4: ORGANIC ELEMENTS

Bringing nature inside, with and a desire for more organic materials surrounding us, is a theme you can expect to see carried throughout home decor trends in 2021.

Inspired by our nesting instincts, more organic materials will be a common thread, accompanied also by the minimalist Scandinavian design characteristics. The amplification of wood grain in decor and design will be notable while contrasting shades and lighter tones will help to accentuate those natural features. We will find metals and matte finishes balancing the sometimes glossy materials, but with clarity, and comfort, in a simple and elegant manner.

TREND #5: LINEAR ACCENTS & DESIGNS

It is predicted that we will also notice more linear structures in decor and patterned design as well. The past year we have seen a bit of resurgence in Art Deco elements popping up in high-end design. Perhaps that will set the stage for our more hopeful future of our lives returning to a more familiar social normal- and a time where we will be able to celebrate and entertain again. Hopefully however, for now may we enjoy the comforts of our cocoons at home!

TREND #6: FLORAL, ORGANIC, & MINIMALIST PRINTS

Patterns and wallpapers are on the rise and we now have more options, as with with “peel and stick”, and an increased access to better designs. Consistent with next year’s trend predictions, and pivoting from 2020, we can definitely expect to see more patterns with floral designs, organic colors, shapes, and minimalist patterns. What better time than now to go back to the the good old nude portrait but on repeat? Admittedly, I just love the following pattern, found at Lulu & Georgia.

Floral is not a favorite of mine to be honest, perhaps because it was the experience of growing up in the age of hunter green, gingham, and pink floral—— but the subdued colors of the following wall covering (also found at Lulu & Georgia) is a welcome calm retreat that I can definitely get on board with.

Well then….. there you have it! Those are just a few of many trends we can expect to see next year. Is it what you had thought? What else do you think we’ll see?
